Alexandra Matheou is a screenwriter and director. Her work explores the intersection of the intimate and the social, with a focus on female subjectivity, class, and belonging. Set within shifting folds of reality, her films often inhabit the space between the ordinary and the absurd.
Her short films have screened at festivals and museums worldwide. Her latest short film, Free Eliza (Notes on an Anatomical Imperfection), premiered at Quinzaine des Cinéastes in Cannes. Her previous short film A Summer Place (2021) was supported by the CNC and earned selections and awards at major international festivals across the world including AFI, Palm Springs, Uppsala, São Paulo and Tampere among others. The film was also nominated for Best Short Film at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards.
Alexandra is currently developing and financing her debut feature with support from the Cyprus Film Fund, the Greek Film Centre and Creative Europe MEDIA. The project has been recognized by several international development initiatives, receiving among other distinctions the top award at the Crossroads Co-Production Forum of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Producer's Network Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Its development has been supported by Onassis Culture, First Films First (Goethe-Institut), the Oxbelly Screenwriters and Directors Lab, the Mediterranean Film Institute lab and the Pelion Screenwriting Residency (co-founded alongside Emma Doxiadi).
Alexandra holds an LLB and LLM from King's College London and an MA in Film Studies from University College London.
